A Calabar man, his two children and two other persons have reportedly died after consuming dog meat in Uchenyim village, Wanikade, North Ukelle Local Government Area of the Cross River State.

PMNews reports that the sad incident occurred after the victims ate the meat of a dog that had been sick in the village.

It was gathered that the man reportedly killed the dog, which was ill and was about to die.

But instead of throwing it away, he decided to make delicacy out of it with his two sons and other persons.

According to an eyewitness in the area, Ugbem Onawo, the dog always eats eggs laid by chickens in the village and one of the villagers allegedly laced the eggs with Gamalin 20 insecticide.

“The dog ate the eggs and fell ill and when it was about to die, the owner quickly killed and prepared it into a delicacy which he, his family and some neigbours ate”, Onawo, a villager narrated.

The source said though many fell sick after eating the meat, those who died also ate the intestines of the dog where incidentally the poison from the Gamalin 20 is lodged.

Frank Ugbem, the councillor representing Wanikade Ward in Yala Local Government Council legislature described the tragedy as painful.

According to PremiumTimes – A 19- year old student of Law at the Ahmadu Bello University has been diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus in Kaduna.

The Public Relations Officer, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Bilyaminu Umar, while confirming the case on Monday when contacted via phone said the student was diagnosed at ABUTH, Shika, Zaria.

“Yes, there was a case of a suspected Ebola patient. He is with the Faculty of Law, ABU, Zaria and will be placed on isolation. I am out of town, but will confirm details on my return from a trip,” he said.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber, Olalekan Ajibola, who allegedly operated on some streets in Mushin, Lagos.

Ajibola was first arrested by the Olosan Police Division, Mushin before his case was transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.

It was further gathered that one of Ajibola’s victims, identified simply as Ogungbe, had tipped-off the police on the suspect’s activities.

Around 3am on the fateful day, Ajibola had gone to Ogungbe’s residence on Folarin Street, Mushin and had attempted to break open the door with his axe.

It was learnt that Ogungbe’s wife raised the alarm, while the husband called the police from the Olosan division who came to arrest the suspect.

Ajibola, who hails from Abebi in Ibadan, Oyo State,said that an axe was his only weapon for robbery, adding that he had operated with it on five different occasions, hacking uncooperative victims.

He said, “I do not live with my parents. They are divorced. My father is a commercial driver in Lagos. He shuttles between the Oyingbo and Bariga areas. He also does building contractor jobs. My mother, however, lives in Ibadan. She is mentally sick and is confined to the house. She was formerly a chemist but she stopped working when she fell sick.

“I learnt to rob while in Oyingbo. When I go out for operations, I carry my axe. I have operated with it on five different occasions. When I enter houses, I ask people for money, phones and other valuables. If they resist, I will hack them with the axe. I use the axe for cutting victims who resist.”

Ajibola added that he took to robbery because of poverty and that there were four other members in his gang.

He said, “I was brought up in a hard way. That is why I also don’t dress well. I rob in order to survive. I eat at any restaurant I find myself. I sneak in and out of them to have my meals. My father does not know or care where I am. It was only my mother who took care of me initially.

“My father left my mum when her mental sickness started. Since then, I had been wandering around till I got to Lagos. I was learning work before in Ibadan. I also sold clothes. I attended a primary school in Ibadan. That was the only education I had.”

According to Nesrescue.com – Nigeria’s main opposition party, All Progressives Congress, APC, has demanded the immediate trial, by the International Criminal Court, of two former Nigerian officials named by a government-appointed negotiator as the sponsors of Islamist group Boko Haram.

At a press conference Tuesday, the APC called on President Goodluck Jonathan to hand over former governor of Borno state, Ali Modu Sheriff, and former Chief of Army Staff, Azubuike Ihejirika, to the International Criminal Court, ICC, to face trial over their alleged sponsorship of the group.

The National Chairman of APC, John Oyegun, who spoke at the National Secretariat of the party in Abuja, said his party expects the president to “summon courage” and “do the right thing”.

“Now that the cat has been let out of the bag and the real sponsors of Boko Haram have been exposed, we hope President Jonathan will summon the courage to do the right thing: Hand over the identified Boko Haram sponsors to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution,” Mr. Oyegun said.

“There is no doubt that Boko Haram has committed crimes against humanity in its scorched-earth campaign against unharmed citizens, and the most appropriate body to investigate and try the sect’s sponsors is the ICC.

“According to Article 17 of the Rome Statute that set up the ICC, and to which Nigeria is signatory, the ICC is a court of last resort, expected to exercise its jurisdiction only if states themselves are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute international crimes,” Mr. Oyegun said.

An Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, appointed by the Nigerian government to help rescue more than 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram, has accused the former army chief and former governor as the major sponsors of the deadly sect.

Messrs Sheriff and Ihejirika have denied the allegation.

The divorce mess between Pastors Chris and Anita Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy Church has worsened, P.M.NEWS can reveal.

 According to Sahara Reporters – On Sunday, two days after it was reported that Anita Oyakhilome had filed for divorce, Christ Embassy deleted her pictures and personal information from its official website, http://www.christembassy.org.

 Many describe the action as the beginning of a process to shut her out of the church, after she accused her husband of “adultery” and “unreasonable behaviours” in a divorce suit filed in London last April but only made public on Friday.

Christ Embassy’s new website now shows only Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, with a broad smile welcoming his followers to the month of August, and tagging it, ‘Month of Praise’.

In the message on the website, Oyakhilome also urges his followers to “rejoice for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Also, on the website of the Rhapsody of Realities, a daily devotional co-authored by the esrtwhile couple, there’s nothing to show that Anita is still recognised as the only visible face on the website among the family members is that of her husband.

It was too early to know if the September edition of the Rhapsody of Realities still has the photographs of both the pastor and his wife as it used to be.

In the past, when the going was good, Anita and Chris Oyakhilome held hands on the church website and smiled broadly. They projected the image of a perfect couple.

But P.M.NEWS checks at the weekend revealed that there is confusion in the church following the divorce suit filed by Anita to end her over two decades marriage to the founder of Christ Embassy Church.

In the past, Pastor Chris headed the Nigerian branch of the church, though he travelled to other branches occasionally, while Anita headed the branch in London and its environs.

Christ Embassy and its founder have been embroiled in a myriad of controversies in the past. In 2010, Oyakhilome was accused of engineering a money laundering scheme in Nigeria, and questions swirled around his finances because of his glamorous lifestyle.

Many pastors and theologians also excoriated Oyakhilome for his “New Creation” doctrine—a form of gnosticism that says after a person becomes a Christian, any sin they commit is only in the body and will not affect the spirit.

In 2008, Oyakhilome’s reputation as a faith healer was tarnished badly in Johannesburg, South Africa, when a man told a Soweto newspaper that Christ Embassy offered him more than $1,200 to sit in a wheelchair and pretend to be crippled until Oyakhilome prayed for him.

“The man went to the media instead of taking the money, sparking concerns that healings were being faked to impress growing crowds,” said Lee Grady in an article in 2012 published by Charisma Magazine.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome has also been a target of criticism by the Treatment Action Campaign for his support of faith healing to cure HIV.

Allegations that Christ Embassy members are reportedly being forced to give huge sums of money in offerings with the biggest donors receiving the biggest awards have left many people concerned.

Many Nigerians have also alleged that the church operates like a cult and pressures members to marry only within Christ Embassy.

Many people also remember the scandal involving Christ Embassy and Sheraton Hotel some years ago when a member of the church, who worked at the Sheraton Hotel, stole money from his employers and gave it to Christ Embassy. But when Sheraton approached the church for reimbursement, the church allegedly claimed that the money had been given to God and could not be refunded.

Many also excoriated Pastor Chris some years ago when the church began collecting gate fees from members for their New Year Eve’s Service.

More recently, Oyakhilome came under attack after he claimed that Christians were free to masturbate because it was not a sin.

But the latest scandal involving Anita and Chris, who have two daughters, seems to threaten the very existence of one of the biggest churches in Nigeria.

Christ Embassy runs several arms including the Healing School, Rhapsody of Realities, and an N.G.O called the Innercity Missions as well as three Christian television channels: LoveWorld TV, LoveWorld SAT and LoveWorld Plus.

The church is scattered all over the world, including in the United Kingdom, the United States, South America and the whole of Europe.

Stories about women bringing men of God down are not new. In 1988, Jimmy Swaggart, a famous American preacher was implicated in a sex scandal involving a prostitute that resulted initially in his suspension, and ultimately defrocking, by the Assemblies of God.

Three years later, Swaggart was implicated in another scandal involving a prostitute. As a result, Swaggart’s ministry became non-affiliated, non-denominational and significantly smaller than it was before the scandals.

No fewer than 45 suspected members of Boko Haram sect have been killed in an encounter with military troops when the terrorists in their large number attempted to invade and take over Bama Local Government Area of Borno state.

Also, over 30 of the insurgents were injured with minor injuries sustained during the fierce battle with the security operatives that lasted over five hours.

The incident according to sources started in the early hours of Monday morning at about 5:30am.

This is even as an unconfirmed report revealed that another group of the insurgents were sighted on Monday around Mafa Local Government Area and Kayamula villages of Konduga Local Government Area near Maiduguri metropolis, but those sighted around Kayamula village were killed by military troops, while those around Mafa were suspected to be making frantic effort to enter the metropolis.

This development according to sources was responsible for the review of the curfew in the metropolis from 6a.m. to

7p.m. as against 9pm earlier imposed on the state which is under emergency rule, according to the spokesman of the 7 Division Nigerian Army, Colonel Sank Usman Bama is about 76 kilometres drive and south east of Maiduguri, the state capital which had witnessed series of deadly attacks by suspected terrorists.

A competent source said, “the insurgents stormed the town through Bama-Banki-Gwoza Road but were intercepted by gallant military troops near the Bama Mobile Police Unit located about five kilometers away from Bama town.

The Boko Haram insurgents were said to have attempted to enter Bama town in military uniform armed with sophisticated weapons and local Improved Explosive Devices (IEDs) and in a convoy of military vehicles and motorcycles.

The battle where gun shots and sounds of Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) as well as bomb explosions took the centre stage had sent hundreds of residents including some prominent traditional rulers (name withheld) fleeing the town through the bush and some by road or vehicles to neighbouring villages including Maiduguri and Konduga towns.

A resident of Bama, one Mallam Abba Usman who fled to Maiduguri on Monday morning told our Correspondent that “there was an attempt by the Boko Baram sect to enter Bama town or capture Bama as they did in Gwoza some weeks back, but thank God for the good efforts of the military troops stationed near the mobile police unit who repelled the attack in a joint effort with their colleagues from the 21 Brigade of the Nigerian Army who gallantly succeeded in repelling the attack killing about 45 of the insurgents and wounded over 30.”

He added that “the situation actually scared many of our people and even forced some of us to run to Maiduguri town for safety while some I learnt are in Konduga as some are said to be in the rural villages hiding”.

Another resident of Bama, Alhaji Masa Bukar who fled to Maiduguri and is presently at a refugee camp at Konduga motor park along Bama road opposite Uuniversity of Maiduguri said, “we are here because we woke up this morning during the subh prayer hearing gunshots and RPGs shots around the Bama Technical College and mobile police unit Bama along Banki road. We were advised to even leave the town by the military and civilian JTF. God help us.

They asked us to leave Bama to give them the chance to fully fight the Boko Haram people. So we have to leave. Some of us had to stop over along the way, taking refuge in Kawuri, Goniri and Konduga, but we decided to come to Maiduguri where there is heavy military presence.

We are afraid and scared. Our people are still coming out from Bama. Although few hours ago, we saw military reinforcement moving towards the Bama town from Maiduguri. Many military vehicles and armoured cars have passed to Bama this morning to join their colleagues in the fight against the Boko haram insurgents.”

Olubukun Koye was named as the man who avoided quarantine in Lagos and instead went to Port Harcourt to seek treatment from a doctor who died shortly after.

According to THISDAY sources said that Koye (a primary contact of the index case, late Liberian Patrick Sawyer) defied instructions not to leave Lagos after being placed in the isolation unit. Koye’s selfish & reckless act was discussed at the Federal Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Mohammed Adoki was directed to look into the Nigerian laws and see how he could be sanctioned for his action that resulted in the death of Enemuo.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo commented on the current outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the country. He said it was “devilish enough that Patrick Sawyer in connivance with some Liberian authorities,” imported ‘the evil’ to Nigeria.
“He brought the evil into the country,” Obasanjo speaks about Sawyer.
Obasanjo made this statement in the afternoon of August 30, 2014, during a talk on ‘An afternoon with Obasanjo’ programme organised by Inside Watch Africa continental magazine, published by Oluwaseyi Adegoke-Adeyemo.
The ex president emphasised that the virus takes both lives and economic toll. According to him, the negative effects have already started and would hit communities, the nation, West African region and sub-region.
Obasanjo is sure that the Liberian authorities knew condition of Sawyer, but still allowed him to travel.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker, says the late Dr. Samuel Enemou, who treated Olu Koye, a Nigerian diplomat with the Economic Community of West African States, was aware that the diplomat was a carrier of the deadly Ebola virus.

The commissioner stated this during a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday evening.
Parker said, “He had received the late Dr. Patrick Sawyer in Lagos. Upon developing the symptom, confided in a female colleague, called Lilian, who contacted the late Enemuo. It was after contact was established with Dr. Enemuo that Olu Koye flew to Port Harcourt to see him.
“To conceal his movement, Koye, who had been quarantined among other people for having primary contact with the late Dr. Sawyer, the Liberian-American who transmuted the Ebola virus into Nigeria, sneaked out of the isolation unit where he was being observed and took a flight to Port Harcourt and switched off his phone so that he could not be reached or traced should he answer a call.”

On arrival in Port Harcourt, he said Koye checked into Mandate Gardens, a local hotel in the Rumunokoro area in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The hotel is within the Rumunokoro area where Dr. Enemuo’s private health facility, Sam Steel Clinic is located.
Parker added, “From what we have gathered so far, Dr. Enemuo, knowing that Koye was positive of the Ebola virus took some measures of precaution to protect himself while treating Koye.
“Knowing the enormity of what he was doing, Enemuo upon Koye’s departure for Lagos, poured bleach all over the room that Koye slept in order to sanitise the place.”

He said the deceased, after having developed the symptom, approached a colleague for treatment at Good Heart Hospital along Evo Road in G.R.A.

He said Enemuo did not tell the doctor that was treating him the truth, stressing that he merely told him that he had fever.

Parker said, “He lied. He did not tell the doctor that was treating him his full story. But the doctor, a nice and conscientious professional, suspected that Enemuo was either hiding something or was suffering from a strange ailment because he proved negative to malaria, fever and typhoid fever.
“To be sure of what he was doing, he spoke to other very experienced doctors about the strange case he was handling in his hospital.”
The commissioner said the doctor treating Enemuo even invited some his colleagues to come over to his hospital to study Enemuo’s medical history.
He said because the news of the Ebola virus was all everywhere, those he called were afraid to honour the invitation.
Parker added that none of them showed up at the hospital where Enemuo was being treated, stressing that Enemuo’s condition continued to deteriorate until he died after which body was taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
The commissioner also declared that the advent of the dreaded Ebola virus in the state was currently posing a challenge, saying the development was tantamount to a war time situation.
He said the Rivers State governor, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, had pledged to provide funds to enable the state to procure all relevant materials as well as the services of medical experts from Nigeria and abroad to contain the virus.
Parker also said 60 more people who had secondary contacts with Koye were quarantined last night, bringing the total so far to 100.

Ahead of the September 6 primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the emergence of the party’s candidate for the October 11 gubernatorial election in Adamawa State, the party Saturday disqualified the acting governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri from contesting,vanguard reports.
Addressing Journalists ay after the nine hours screening exercise, chairman of the PDP Screening panel for Adamawa State and former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ibrahim Nasir Mantu said that the Panel while relying on Section 191(2) of 1999 Constitution, the Acting governor cannot contest because he is a child of circumstance, a midwife and not the woman carrying the baby.
Of the fourteen aspirants who appeared before the Mantu-led Committee, only the Acting governor was disqualified while thirteen others were cleared to participate in the party’s primary election.
